2G shutdown

2G shutdown

If your controller connects to OrbiSCADA through a 2G modem (such as the Cinterion BGS2 or MC66), it depends on the 2G GSM/GPRS network being available at the site. Mobile operators worldwide are gradually shutting down their 2G networks, and once this happens at your site the modem cannot connect regardless of SIM, antenna, or signal.

Why operators are shutting down 2G

2G is over 30 years old. Operators are decommissioning it to:

  • Reuse the radio spectrum for newer technologies (4G LTE and 5G)
  • Reduce the cost of maintaining old network equipment
  • Simplify their network with fewer technology layers

3G is being shut down for the same reasons, often earlier than 2G. Many operators are keeping 2G running longer than 3G because it is widely used by IoT devices, alarm systems, eCall in cars, and other low-bandwidth equipment that has not yet been upgraded.

Timelines vary by country

There is no single European or global deadline. Each country sets its own pace, and within a country each mobile operator decides when to shut down its own 2G network. This means a 2G modem may continue working for many years in one country while becoming unusable in a neighbouring country. It also means a SIM from one operator may stop working while a SIM from a different operator in the same country still works.

How to check the status for your site

Always confirm with your mobile operator, because they are the only authoritative source for your specific SIM and area. For an overview before contacting your operator, these resources track 2G shutdown schedules across countries:

These are third-party sources and may not be fully up to date for every operator. Use them as a starting point and confirm with your operator.
